When you hear the term "South Asian", what do you think it means? According to Wikipedia [1], it refers to a "geographical and ethno-cultural concept". The South Asian region includes the following countries:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Bhutan
  • India
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • Sri Lanka
  • Maldives

This region is geographically surrounded by the mountains (e.g. Himalaya) on the north, and various bodies of water (e.g. Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea) on other sides. With a 0.25% the world's population, South Asian is one of the most densely populated region.

The historical South Asia navigated through several prominent eras. For example, the ancient era consisted the Indus Valley Civilization as the first major civilization from 3300 to 1300 BCE. Afterwards, multiple great figures and empires resided in the South Asian region, such as Alexander the Great, Mughal empire and British colonists. 

One of the major impacts from the British era in the modern-day South Asia was the language. Prior, Hindi and Urdu were the prominent language spoken. However, English is now the preferred language in school, government and military [2].

South Asian is renowned for its spices and curried dishes. Its clothing is filled with vibrant colors and textures. Cricket and Bollywood are two significant aspects of the South Asian culture. 

South Asian is rich in history, food, languages, culture, people and more, and it is a region worth celebrating!
